Join veterans and featured exhibition artists including a music performance by Brittney Chantele on March 18 at Chicago Cultural Center's Exhibition Hall and Theater for a night entitled Forging Hope.
Influenced by their personal experiences, Chantele utilizes the art of hip-hop, a genre with a history of social and political activism. Brittney Chantele [US Army veteran] is a dynamic pop/hip hop artist and DJ on the rise. Chantele’s music focuses on their military experience, queer identity, and relationship experiences through a refreshingly honest lens. As a biracial, non-binary, lesbian artist, Chantele is committed to creating a world where Queer people and Queer love aren’t just seen, but fully represented and respected.
The exhibition coincides with the second Veteran Art Triennial and Summit, titled Surviving the Long Wars, held this year in Chicago. The exhibition at Chicago Cultural Center is open from March 4 through June 4, 2023.
Other Surviving the Long Wars Veteran Art Summit opening program events include Residues and Rebellions on March 16 at Newberry Library and Unlikely Entanglements on March 17 at Hyde Park Art Center.
ABOUT 'SURVIVING THE LONG WARS' PROJECT:
From the US “Indian Wars” to the “Global War on Terror,” Surviving the Long Wars explores the multiple overlapping histories that shape our understanding of warfare, as well as alternative visions of peace, healing, and justice generated by diverse communities impacted by war.
Inspired by the powerful artwork of Indigenous and Native American artists responding to the US “Indian Wars,” and artists of the Greater Middle East reacting to the “Global War on Terror,” Surviving the Long Wars focuses on how these artistic responses complicate and entangle with the artistic practices of veterans. The featured artworks, projects, and programs create opportunities for people to deepen their understanding of the impact of war.
