If the typical Nelson Algren fan were asked, "Who were Algren's friends?" the fan would probably answer "Art Shay" or "Studs Terkel." And this person would be right.
But Algren scholar Dick Bales goes beyond these and the other usual suspects in his soon-to-be-published book, Nelson Algren: His Life, Work, and Colleagues.
In one of the essays in this book, Bales talks about Algren's relationships with Mike Royko; Herman Kogan and Marilew Kogan, who were the parents of Chicago Tribune columnist Rick Kogan; and even my favorite, gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson.
Dick offers an explanation to a long-time Algren mystery: Why did Algren dedicate the third edition of his book, Chicago: City on the Make to none other than Joan Baez? Bales will talk about Algren and these people in Algren's life in his presentation.
Join us Friday, July 12 at 7:00 pm to hear Richard Bales speak on his second book on our favorite author, Nelson Algren, His Life, Work and Colleagues.
And then return Friday, August 9 to hear Mary Wisnieski speak on Algren's wives at 7:00 pm.
Both events take place at the Nelson Algren 616 Sound Stage, located at 616 South Lake Street in Miller Beach/Gary, Indiana.
Drinks are available for purchase next door at Thumbs Up, that totally Algrenesque bar Algren must have frequented.
The Sound Stage is an open-air venue. In case of rain, we will relocate to the Nelson Algren Museum of Miller Beach, half a block north at 541 South Lake Street.
Best wishes for a wonderful summer.
