Taino Areyto

On Friday, May 31 at 11 am and Saturday, June 1 at 12 pm, join the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture for the Taíno Areyto, a ceremonial dance of the Taino, the indigenous people of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti/Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas. Twenty members of the Concilio Taíno Guatu-Ma-cu A Borikén (Puerto Rico) are bringing this performance to Chicago for the first time! It’s a unique opportunity to learn about the Taíno Indigenous people of Puerto Rico (Borikén) and their rich traditions. The Museum will set up a tent with seating on its beautiful lawn to recreate a Batey-like space for this historic ceremony. This performance is a highlight of the Museum’s exhibition, ¡Taíno Vive! Caribbean Indigenous Resistance, in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institute, the Field Museum, and the Concilio Taíno Guatu-Ma-cu A Borikén. Immediately following the Saturday performance will be an announcement and ceremony for the Humboldt Park neighborhood’s renaming from “Puerto Rico Town” to “Barrio Borikén”, symbolizing the move to a more authentic indigenous representation of the local Puerto Rican community. Suggested donation of $10. Donations directly support the work of Concilio Taíno Guatu-Ma-cu A Borikén.
