The USO presents two pillars of the Romantic repertoire: Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 4 in D minor and Richard Strauss’ masterful tone poem, Don Juan. Schumann’s tightly integrated symphony was written in 1841 but heavily revised and reorchestrated a decade later. Strauss’ ebullient tone poem creates a vivid portrait of the notorious libertine from Renaissance-era Spain, as reinterpreted through an unfinished 1844 work by the Austrian poet Nikolaus Lenau, whom Schumann also admired.
