Major Taylor Trail Ribbon Cutting Celebration

Trust for Public Land, in partnership with Major Taylor Trail Keepers, Friends of the Major Taylor Trail, and the Chicago Park District, invites members of the media to attend the Major Taylor Trail Ribbon Cutting celebration on Saturday, June 6, 2026. This event celebrates two new community-driven improvements along the Major Taylor Trail that enhance both the trail experience and the surrounding natural environment. Attendees will celebrate the unveiling of Holding Space, a new public art installation by Nnenna Okore featuring a canopy-like steel structure with vibrant Ankara fabric designed to create a welcoming gathering space for neighbors and trail users. Trail-goers will also celebrate the completion of a half-mile natural area restoration completed in partnership with the Chicago Park District, replacing invasive and weedy vegetation with healthier native plantings. The event will include remarks from local officials and community leaders, along with food, artmaking, and family-friendly activities celebrating community connection, public art, and outdoor access on Chicago’s South Side.
