Now in its third year, Chicago Sukkah Design Festival pairs community organizations in the North Lawndale neighborhood with diverse architectural designers to design and construct sukkahs — small outdoor pavilions built for the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. Kick off the 20-day festival on Sunday, October 6th at the opening celebration to experience the sukkahs and enjoy an afternoon of food, family-friendly art-making activities. Join artist Rachel Ellison of Bat Sarah Press will lead a make-your-own local lulav workshop at 1pm and artist Ytasha Womack for a communal Afrofuturist dance experience at 4pm. Additional festival programming includes architecture and designer roundtables, an interfaith community dinner, and neighborhood tours led by Shermann "Dilla" Thomas the Chicago Urban Historian.
After the 20-day Festival, each sukkah will be relocated and permanently re-installed at the facilities of the community organizations that co-designed them, as vibrant new program spaces. Examples from 2023 include a sukkah as a rooftop playscape, a heritage museum installation, a meditation and healing pavilion, a community memorial, and a tool library kiosk.
