San Juan Hill: Manhattan’s Lost Neighborhood uncovers the erased history of a vibrant Black and Latino community in Manhattan that was declared a slum and demolished in the name of urban renewal. Backed by city officials and powerful real estate interests, the area was cleared to make way for Lincoln Center.
Through rare archives, new records, expert analysis, and poignant interviews with former residents, the film resurrects the story of this vanished Manhattan enclave. It celebrates the people, the thriving arts scene, and the rich culture that defined San Juan Hill, revealing a powerful and enduring legacy whose impact is still felt across New York City.
PANEL discussion with film producer Rita Coburn and other guests TBA followed by Closing Reception.
Presented in collaboration with Palenque LSNA
