MWN Asthma Summit & Resource Fair: Protecting Our Breath, Protecting Our Communities
Asthma continues to be a growing health concern across Northwest Indiana and beyond, disproportionately affecting children, minority communities, and families living in areas with higher pollution and environmental stressors. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 25 million people in the United States live with asthma—including over 5 million children. Locally, the burden is even more concerning: in Lake County, Indiana, asthma-related emergency room visits among children and young adults remain significantly higher than the state average, reflecting the urgent need for education, prevention, and stronger access to resources.
To address this pressing health issue, the Multicultural Wellness Network (MWN) is hosting the Asthma Summit & Resource Fair, a community-wide event designed to bring together residents, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and environmental experts to learn, share resources, and take proactive steps in managing asthma.
This free event, open to the public, will feature:
Vendors and Resource Partners: Local and regional organizations providing tools, products, and information to help individuals and families better manage asthma and improve their quality of life.
Environmental & Pollution Experts: Leading voices will discuss how air quality, industrial pollution, and environmental justice directly impact respiratory health, with practical guidance on reducing exposure risks.
Health & Wellness Professionals: Medical providers and public health advocates will share the latest research, treatment strategies, and prevention resources to help families take control of asthma management.
The summit will serve both individuals living with asthma and the caregivers who provide daily support, offering them a safe space to ask questions, connect with resources, and engage in meaningful discussions about solutions that can ease the challenges of this chronic condition.
Why This Event Matters
Asthma is not just a personal health issue—it is a community challenge. Across Indiana:
1 in 12 adults and 1 in 10 children live with asthma.
Black and Latino children are more likely to be hospitalized for asthma complications, reflecting significant disparities in access to care and environmental risks.
Air quality in Northwest Indiana, impacted by industrial activity and traffic pollution, consistently ranks as one of the top factors contributing to higher asthma rates.
By bringing together experts in health, environment, and community resources, the Asthma Summit & Resource Fair aims to empower families with knowledge, tools, and advocacy opportunities. It also helps highlight broader issues of environmental justice, ensuring that vulnerable communities most affected by pollution and asthma are not left behind.
For caregivers, the summit will offer support networks and practical strategies for managing asthma flare-ups at home and school. For individuals living with asthma—especially children and young adults—the event provides opportunities to access free resources, demonstrations, and education that can help reduce emergency visits and improve long-term health outcomes.
MWN’s commitment is clear: creating healthier communities by addressing the root causes of asthma, connecting residents to resources, and advocating for cleaner, safer environments.
