The dhrupad genre is the most ancient extant form of Hindustani classical music, widely practiced in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India. As opposed to more recent developments that include khyal, thumri and other, better known forms, dhrupad maintains a practice that reaches back to the time of the Mughal court of Emperor Akhbar and his principal court musician, the legendary Tansen, and earlier. Yet Pandit Bhawalkar has developed an approach that speaks dramatically to today via both majestic simplicity and sparkling rhythm. Sukhad Munde's playing on pakhawaj–a powerful, double-headed barrel drum with a ringing sound–adds flavor and liveliness, along with head-spinning virtuosity. Kirit Singh's vocal accompaniment completes and enriches the musical texture.
