Thirdstream: Music for Saxophone, Violin, and Cello

Missing Piece is proud to announce the premiere of their 2025 Thirdstream project. Thirdstream is neither classical nor jazz, or both classical and jazz, or music that explores porous boundaries, or exposes limits of traditions and genres, and asks what’s possible in musical conversations. For this project, experimental classical violin/cello duo Missing Piece commissions three Chicago saxophonists/composers to write music for saxophone, violin, and cello. These compositions by Mai Sugimoto, Fred Jackson Jr., and Hunter Diamond explore notated sounds, spontaneous sounds, and encourage us to listen in unexpected ways. This project is supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council. These three new works will premiere at Constellation, 3111 N Western, in Chicago March 16th at 8:30pm. Missing Piece is south side Chicago-based musical duo, violinist Dan Galat and cellist Kelly Quesada, who endeavor to commission new musical works and works from other artistic disciplines on themes that inspire others to connect with their community, care for our environment, listen deeply to ourselves and others, and speak out against injustice. Since its formation in 2022, Missing Piece has commissioned and premiered twenty nine new works, including standard notation, text and graphic scores, poetry, film, ceramics, movement, and improvisation. Hunter Diamond is a creative woodwind and sound artist based in Chicago. Though he is most at home in the improvised music scene, a mixture of conceptual, composed, and improvised performance keeps him perpetually present in the interdisciplinary Chicago creative arts community. Mai Sugimoto is a Japanese-born saxophonist, composer, educator, and active member of Chicago's jazz and creative music scene. Her latest release album, Sunlight Filtering Through Leaves (Asian Improv, 2024) features Joshua Abrams on bass, and Isaiah Spencer on drums. Fred Jackson Jr. is a multi-instrumentalist and composer and has been a member of the AACM since 2010. His newest venture is Spacetonic Music (Music publishing label since 2017). Fred was awarded the 2020-21 “Fresh Works, New Voices” grant from the Jazz Institute of Chicago. Jackson records and writes original music while working with groups such as Helical Rising Of Sothis (Adam Zanolini), Mai Sugimoto Quartet and his own ensembles (Erudition Project).
