Morton Feldman's Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello

Christopher Narloch, Dan Galat, Nicholas Jeffery, and Kelly Quesada team up to perform Morton Feldman's "Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello". Written in Feldman's final year, 1987, this is a concert-length work about 75 minutes in duration. Its quiet and sparse sound contrasts with rhythmic precision and an unpredictable form to provide an other-worldly experience. Feldman, part of a New York group of avant garde composers and artists including John Cage and Jackson Pollock that sought new modes of expression. Feldman asks “Do we have anything in music for example that really wipes everything out? That just cleans everything away?” Christopher Narloch Christopher Narloch has been teaching at their own studio in Ravenswood Manor, Chicago since 2011. They have over 60 private students and host four studio recitals each year, including one each summer in Ravenswood Manor Park. In the past few years, Christopher has been performing solo recitals featuring the complete piano solos of Philip Glass, the complete piano sonatas of Galina Ustvolskaya, the complete mazurkas of Frédéric Chopin, and the complete piano sonatas of Paul Hindemith. Christopher has also performed nearly all of the late piano and late chamber works of Morton Feldman. In addition to performing at top venues throughout the Chicago area and collaborating with a wide range of musicians, they also curate and host concerts at their studio. Christopher received an MM in Piano Performance and Piano Pedagogy from Bowling Green State University studying with Dr. Robert Satterlee, and a BM from Viterbo University studying with Dr. Timothy Schorr. In 2018, they received the Chicago Area Music Teachers Association (CAMTA) Teacher of the Year Award. web: narlochpiano.com Dan Galat Dan Galat is a Chicago-based violinist and violist, a classically trained performer comfortable across a wide range of styles and techniques. Working primarily with living composers, Dan can be found with Chicago's new music ensembles such as Fulcrum Point New Music or as the concertmaster of Chicago Composers Orchestra. Dan Galat is the founding member of Missing Piece with cellist Kelly Quesada, a Chicago music ensemble that endeavors to commission new musical works and works from other artistic disciplines on themes that inspire others to connect with their community, care for our environment, listen deeply to ourselves and others, and speak out against injustice. Dan Galat is active across a variety of styles, including Baroque music with the Bach Cantata Vespers, or as a recording musician, recently with Manuel Cinema in their short film Future Feeling. Dan was the violinist, violist, and backup vocalist for the 24-show premiere in Chicago of Illinoise, the adaptation of Sufjan Stevens's album into a musical now on Broadway. Dan received his BM and MM at Indiana University, studying with Kevork Mardirossian, Desiree Ruhstrat, and Joseph Swensen. dangalat.com Nicholas Jeffery Nicholas Jeffery is a violist and teacher in Kalamazoo Michigan. He holds degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where he studied with Catherine Carroll and Masao Kawasaki, and from the University of Wisconsin-Madison where his main teacher was Sally Chisholm. As a performer, Dr. Jeffery has been a member of the Madison Symphony orchestra, and served as Principal Viola of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra. An active chamber musician, Dr. Jeffery helped to found the Ursa Ensemble, a mixed chamber ensemble in Chicago, IL, and has been invited to appear as a guest artist with the Willy Street Chamber Players, and the Heart Strings Ensemble in Madison, WI. He currently serves as Principal Viola of the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, and Assistant Principal of the Kalamazoo Symphony where he also performs as a member of the Burdick-Thorne String Quartet. web: jefferyviola.com Kelly Quesada Kelly Quesada is a cellist based in the Bridgeport neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. Active as both an orchestral and chamber musician, Kelly can be seen playing in a range of styles, from new music, to classical, to Baroque performance practice, to free improvisation. She is currently the other half of the duo Missing Piece with violinist Dan Galat, as well as cellist of Tuuli Quartet. Previously, Kelly was principal cellist of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, a founding member of the Delgani String Quartet, and has toured as a member of the Portland Cello Project. In addition to her extensive performance career, Kelly is also active as an educator, working with students spanning all ages and levels in private lessons and group instruction. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in cello performance from the University of Alabama where she studied with Carlton McCreery and a Master’s from the University of Oregon where she studied with Steven Pologe and Marc Vanscheeuwijck.
