Frequency Series: Ritual Action,Varo String Quartet+Bendrick

Cline) Andrew Nogal, oboe Andy Hudson, clarinet Ben Roidl-Ward, bassoon Set 2: Varo String Quartet and Molly Bendrick premiere what it means to fall apart (2024) by Kris Bendrick Molly Bendrick, soprano Carmen Abelson, violin Hannah Christiansen, violin Lena Vidulich, viola Isidora Nojkovic, cello ___ Ritual Action is a reed trio uniting oboist Andrew Nogal, clarinetist Andy Hudson, and bassoonist Ben Roidl-Ward, three contemporary music advocates based in the Midwest. As a group, they champion modern classics of the reed trio repertoire and commission daring new music for oboe, clarinet, and bassoon. All three are alumni of the Lucerne Festival Academy, the summer training program founded by Pierre Boulez. Ritual Action has performed and recorded in residencies at SUNY Fredonia, Knox College, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and Lewis & Clark College (Portland, OR). Varo String Quartet (Carmen Abelson and Hannah Christiansen, violins; Lena Vidulich, viola; and Isidora Nojkovic, cello) is dedicated to the celebration and expansion of the string quartet genre. Through intentional programming, VSQ engages new audiences and collaborators with a spirit of curiosity and innovation. The members of VSQ have backgrounds spanning many genres and have performed with groups including Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Thurman Barker & the Cagy Bird Orchestra, Lyric Opera Orchestra, Japanese Breakfast, Ensemble Dal Niente, Music Theatre International, and Chicago Sinfonietta. Varo String Quartet takes its name from the Surrealist painter Remedios Varo, whose vibrant creativity and lifelong pursuit of discovery inspire the Quartet’s inventive programming and spirited performances. Molly Bendrick is a flutist, vocalist, and early childhood music educator. She currently teaches at Crescendo Academy of Music where she works as a Flute Teaching Artist and as a Music Together® Specialist. Molly is an advocate for promoting contemporary music which pushes the musician to new levels. She was the flutist and a founding member of Found Sound New Music Ensemble established in 2018. As a soloist, she was a performer for the Beyond The Masterclass in 2016 where she performed for Jim Walker and Denis Bouriakov. In 2014 she was a semi-finalist for the NAFTZGER Young Artist Competition. When Molly is not making weird sounds into a microphone, she teaches preschool music - working with the preschool teachers in the classroom on how music can help develop necessary skills at an early age. A Kansas native, she holds degrees from Washburn University in Topeka, KS, and Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI. Molly's flute studies were with Geri Turvey, Dr. Rebecca Meador, Dr. Martha Councell-Vargas, and Jeff Zook. Her vocal studies were with the late Dr. Anne Marie Snook.
