Language of Abstraction
CAMOC is proud to present the upcoming exhibition Language of Abstraction, showing as a part of Chicago Exhibition Weekend 2025.
Chicago has long been known for its distinctive blend of Surrealist and Pop Art-influenced figuration—a legacy carried forward by artists Ruyell Ho and Li Lin Lee. Curated by Larry Lee, this exhibition brings together selected works spanning more than fifty years of their practice.
Through abstraction, Ho and Lee reimagine language both directly and indirectly, transforming it into visual form. While each has forged an independent path, their work parallels one another in a shared pursuit: creating a personal lexicon that treats form, structure, and mechanics as the very “body” of written language, whether expressed through ideogram or calligraphy.
Now is the time to acknowledge and celebrate their long artistic careers as part of a prolific contribution to the Chicago art world and Chinese American diasporic experience.
