The Sonoran Dog’s story begins in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, where it was first crafted using locally grown ingredients and flour from Sonoran wheat. It found its way across the border to Tucson, Arizona, gaining fame in the 1980s thanks to hot dog cart vendors like Benjamin Galez and Rolando Mendivil. Their dedication to this mouthwatering creation helped the Sonoran Dog achieve legendary status, culminating in iconic establishments like El Güero Canelo, where its legacy lives on today.

The Traditional Build

The Sonoran Dog is no ordinary hot dog. A soft, slightly sweet bun made from Sonoran wheat flour cradles a bacon-wrapped hot dog fried to perfection. Pinto beans, diced tomatoes, onions (both raw and sautéed), and a medley of sauces—jalapeño lime salsa, mustard, and mayo—combine to create an unforgettable explosion of flavor.
