The Canine Youth Leaders Workshop is a premier educational experience created by Rocky and Rosie’s Dog Kingdom and a partnership with the Oak Park Community Foundation. As a youth-led organization, we believe in empowering young people to take the lead in animal advocacy and community education. This workshop serves as a platform for students to connect with their peers and mentors while diving deep into the world of canine care, training, and professional industry standards.
One of the most impactful segments of the event features the VIP Service Dog Foundation. Their team will introduce students to highly trained service animals, providing a firsthand look at the life-changing work these dogs perform for people with disabilities. This interaction goes beyond simple play, teaching students about the rigorous training, discipline, and legal protections associated with service animals. By witnessing these dogs in action, participants gain a deeper respect for the bond between handlers and their canine partners and the specialized skills required to support accessibility.
The workshop also balances these serious educational moments with high-energy activities and creative expression. Students will have the chance to participate in puppy socialization sessions, where they can learn about canine body language and the importance of early-life training. To keep the energy creative, we have curated a crafting segment where participants can work on dog-themed projects to take home as a memento of their experience. Throughout these activities, mentors weave in essential lessons on responsible pet ownership, emphasizing the time, resources, and love required to care for a dog throughout its entire life.
Finally, the event aims to turn a passion for pets into a potential future. We will explore the diverse landscape of the dog industry, highlighting career paths that range from professional training to grooming and non-profit management. Our goal is for every student to leave not just with a smile, but with a clearer vision of how they can contribute to the animal welfare community. By combining leadership, education, and direct interaction, the Canine Youth Leaders workshop is shaping the compassionate professionals of tomorrow.
