Many wonder what to do with their used Christmas trees as the holidays wind down.Urban Growers Collective (UGC) has found a creative, sustainable, and goat-approved solution: feeding the trees to their 15 Nigerian Pygmy goats!
This unique tradition provides their goats with a nutritious treat, stimulates them, and reduces post-holiday waste. Christmas trees, specifically pine trees, are safe and beneficial for goats, offering vitamins A and C while helping maintain a healthy digestive tract, free of parasites. Goats love to eat trees as a snack! (They eat the bark, branches and leaves).
Requirements for the tree:
- Trees MUST BE free of any decorations, hooks, tinsel, etc. Goats cannot digest metal and it is very harmful to them.
- Make sure trees have not been sprayed with fire retardant (often trees from retailers are sprayed, check branches for dark green coloring)
- More Goat Info: Goats are known for their diverse diets—so much so that myths about them eating aluminum cans still linger (spoiler alert: they can’t and shouldn’t eat metal!). However, their natural appetite for tree bark and pine needles aligns perfectly with this eco-friendly initiative.
WHEN: December 26 - January 11
TIME: 8:30 am-5 pm. (After hours, trees can be left at the front entrance gate).
WHERE: South Chicago Farm (9001 S. Mackinaw Ave/entrance on 90th street)
