Evanston Jazz: Proyecto Libre Dos—Afro Cuban Rhythms Reimagined


Top Chicago jazz players will bring Afro Cuban rhythms to Evanston’s AKAR Auditorium. . It’s a special “Donovan’s Garage” jazz event. The quintet features the jazz violinist James Sanders, whose Proyecto Libre (free project) shows pull equally from free improvisation and Afro-Latin traditions. Joining Sanders in this blue chip quintet will be: • Percussionist Jean Leroy, one of Chicago’s most recognized Afro-Cuban musicians • Drummer Sarah Allen who has performed worldwide with Chicago credentials that include performances with Blue Man Group, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic and many more. • Bass player Freddie Quinteros , a native of Venezuela now based in Chicago performs widely with Latin jazz and jazz ensembles and notably is bassist for the Latin jazz trio Venezuelan Collective • On guitar will be Donovan Mixon, creator of the “Donovan’s Garage” shows, is a fixture in the Chicago jazz scene who has performed throughout the world. A Special Feature: The work of the Evanston visual artist Claire Tarnacki will be on display in the lobby of the AKAR Auditorium before and after the show. It is part of a project by Evanstonian Donovan Mixon to bring great Chicago jazz to his hometown.
