Guests will enjoy six delicious courses, each paired with a Jolie-Laide wine, plus a delightful selection of mignardises to finish the evening. These distinctive wines have been highly prized on the West Coast for a while now, and they're increasingly making waves elsewhere. It's a honor to get to put a spotlight on this special winery here in Charlotte.
Jolie-Laide is part of the "new wave" of California producers making thoughtful, interesting, and highly quaffable wines. They simultaneously celebrate Old World style methods, varietals, and flavor profiles while also working to celebrate lesser-known grapes. It is a testament to their ethos and approach that some of the best growers in the region partner with them in the fields, giving Jolie-Laide wines a strong foundation for what ultimately ends up swirling around in the glass.
The name "Jolie-Laide" is a French phrase that loosely translates to "Pretty Ugly," a nod to the unconventional beauty of these wines. We'll explore some of our personal favorites from their current lineup, all of which will be perfect to have on hand as entertaining season begins. (It doesn't hurt that the artwork on the bottles is strikingly beautiful, too.)
MORE ABOUT SCOTT
Before making wine, Scott worked in the restaurant business in both the front and back of house, including serving as wine director at Thomas Keller's Bouchon. His interest in wine eventually led to the fields, where he has worked harvest, and to wineries, where he has served as cellarmaster. His winemaking experience extends past his own label to include time at Wind Gap, Ryme Cellars and Arnot-Roberts.
