THE CULTURE AND TRADITIONS OF THE GULLAH PEOPLE
Join us in commemoration of Black History Month as we learn more about the rich Gullah history in Charleston from someone who knows it best – Alphonso Brown!
Mr. Brown operates the popular “Gullah Tours,” dubbed by the Charleston Visitors Bureau as one of the Top 10 ways to experience Gullah culture in the Holy City. According to Brown’s website, the Gullah language was spoken by the Lowcountry's first Black inhabitants. The language and culture still thrive today in and around the Charleston/Beaufort, South Carolina region. Gullah Tours explores the places, history, and stories that are relevant to the rich and varied contributions made by Black Charlestonians.
Mr. Brown was born and reared in Rantowles, South Carolina, a rural area about 12 miles south of Charleston. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from S.C. State University in Music and a Master’s Degree from Southern Illinois University. Other Graduate studies in music were done at The University of S.C., Charleston University, and The Citadel.
Mr. Brown is a certified tour guide for the City of Charleston. In addition to owning and operating Gullah Tours, he is the author of A Gullah to Guide Charleston, a bestseller published by The History Press. He is also a lecturer on the Gullah language and Black history of Charleston.
Mr. Brown’s “Gullah Tours” has been featured in Charleston Magazine; Southern Living Magazine; Readers Digest; Charles Kuralt’s bestseller, America; and many more publications. In 2009, his tour was named one of the top five tours in Charleston by Southern magazine. Mr. Brown is also a recipient of the very prestigious “Three Sisters Award,” and has been recognized at one of South Carolina State University Stellar Alumni.
