Have you ever stared at the blank space on a sympathy card or dreaded attending a funeral because you
don’t know what to say to the person who is grieving? Have you wanted to do something to support a
neighbor, friend, or family member who has lost a loved one but felt unsure about what might help?
You’re not alone. The emphasis on being happy and pain-free in American culture has left us untrained
and ill-equipped to face these situations.
The goal of this workshop is for participants to feel more confident that they can walk beside someone
who is on a grief journey. It is for people of all ages. Although the emphasis will be on bereavement
following death, most suggestions would apply to other types of losses such as divorce or employment.
We’ll talk about things that are likely to make those who are grieving feel comforted and stronger and,
conversely, things that may make them feel worse.
The workshop will be facilitated by Linda Lee, PhD. She will present guidelines she developed following
the loss of her spouse, through her training as a volunteer at Tidewell Hospice, and from the grief
literature.
