LWVLee Educational Event - Minds Matter - Importance of Access to Mental Health Resources
According to Mental Health America, 21% of adults in America are experiencing a mental illness. 55% of these adults (over 28 million) receive no treatment. Nearly 1 in 5 children are diagnosed with a behavioral disorder. Only 20% of those children receive care from a specialized care provider.
What are the Florida Facts. In 2021, 11% of Florida children aged 3-17 received Mental Health Care. In 2023, 32.3% of adults reported symptoms of anxietyor depression. According to Forbes Advisor, Florida ranks fifth in the nation for the lowest provision of Mental Health Care. Florida is tied with Georgia for having the second highest percentile of adults in the nation with a Mental Health Illlness who did not receive adequate treatment in the past year.
