The Charlotte County Concert Band, under the artistic direction of Mr. Bob Miller, presents “Music, Music, Music” on Friday, March 3rd at 7:30 PM in the Charlotte Performing Arts Center at Charlotte High School in Punta Gorda. . Whether you prefer marches or musicals or movies or overtures or symphonies, this concert definitely will have music for you to enjoy. You will hear music from England, Ireland, America, and Russia. The soloist for the concert will be soprano Rebecca Harvey.
Opening their program will be the “Royal Fireworks Music” written in 1749 by George Frederic Handel. Even though the night of the performance an entire pavilion was accidently set on fire by a grand firework display and burned to the ground, the music brought Handel the favor of England’s King George II for the rest of his life. Then a short trip to Ireland with a selection entitled “Gaelic Rhapsody.” This medley includes “Londonderry Air,” “ The Irish Washerwoman,” “Rakes of Mallow,” and “The Minstrel Boy.” The band then will take a quick trip to Germany as they perform “Old Comrades March” by Carl Teike. His marches enjoyed immense popularity in Europe and, with “Old Comrades,” he won worldwide fame.
Back on American soil you will enjoy another wonderful march entitled “Crosley March” by Henry Fillmore. It is a spirited, vigorous march that shows off the best of Fillmore's incredible talent for writing marches. This march may not be one of his most famous, but it certainly should be. Remaining in America, the band is proud to perform Sammy Nestico’s “Salute to American Jazz.” This medley of tunes includes Dizzy Gillespie's “Night In Tunisia,” W.C. Handy's “St. Louis Blues,” Duke Ellington's “It Don't Mean A Thing,” and Weather Report's “Birdland.” You will also be treated to a medley of songs from the Broadway stage that includes "Everything's Coming Up Roses" from "Gypsy," "People" from "Funny Girl," "With A Little Bit of Luck" from "My Fair Lady," "On A Clear Day You Can See Forever" from the show of the same name, "Try to Remember" from "The Fantastics," and "That's Entertainment" from the film musical "The Band Wagon."
The concert will conclude with a trip to Russia as the Charlotte County Concert Band performs their major work of the evening: “Finale from Symphony No.1” by Vasily Kalinnikov. The premiere of this symphony was a rousing success, but unfortunately it all came too late in Kalinnikov’s short life to earn him the recognition many felt that he deserved.
We hope that you will join the Charlotte County Concert Band on March 3rd at 7:30 at the Charlotte Performing Arts Center, 701 Carmalita Street, Punta Gorda. Tickets are available online at www.charlottecountyconcertband.com or at the Charlotte Performing Arts Center the night of the concert.
