How NOT to read the Hebrew Bible (aka Old Testament)
Often the Bible is read as if it were simply a devotional grab bag of quippy passages, or a theological dictionary rather than mainly a narrative, or an ethical anthology of moralistic stories or book of virtues, or as simply anachronistic and therefore irrelevant for today. Dr. Roth will explain why these approaches are at best reductionism and at worst contrary to the meaning of the text itself, and he will promote the understanding that the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament is Ancient Near Eastern communal wisdom literature Ancient with a movement toward the future and meant to be meditated upon to more fully grasp its meaning.
