Amateur Radio Skills Day Offers Hands-On Emergency Communications Training

Unlike a traditional Field Day operating event, Skills Day will concentrate on practical, hands-on training. Participants will assemble portable antennas, establish field radio stations and operate communications equipment without relying on commercial electrical service. Scheduled activities include: • Setting up long-distance directional antennas to focus signals over extreme distances. • Installing and testing simple wire antennas that can be rapidly strung between trees in a disaster area. • Operating up to three shortwave radio stations capable of regional and global communications without the internet. • Establishing local VHF/UHF radio stations used to link emergency shelters directly with the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). • Powering field equipment using emergency generators and portable solar/battery setups. • Sending and receiving wireless email over the radio without using the internet. Experienced amateur radio operators will demonstrate how portable communications systems can be deployed at parks, shelters, emergency operations sites and other temporary locations. Visitors will be able to observe the equipment, speak with operators and learn about the training required to establish reliable communications under field conditions. Amateur radio can operate independently of cellular networks and the internet. Skills Day demonstrates that effective emergency communications depend not only on equipment, but also on trained operators who are prepared to assemble, test and operate that equipment when it is needed most. Local government officials, emergency managers and community leaders are especially encouraged to attend. The event will provide an opportunity to see firsthand the capabilities, commitment and dedication of local amateur radio operators who train to support emergency communications throughout Lee County.
