Online Lecture: Solar-Powered Sea Slugs

Sea slugs are a diverse and colorful group of gastropod mollusks. Because they are lacking the defensive shell that protects most snails, slugs have evolved a variety of fascinating ways to protect themselves and make a living. Some of these fascinating mollusks have even become solar powered. In this talk, we will learn about the diversity of sea slugs and how some of them have managed to harness the power of the sun. Michael Middlebrooks, Ph.D., is an invertebrate zoologist and an Associate Professor of Biology at the University of Tampa. He is an avid scuba diver and passionate about underwater exploration. Dr. Middlebrooks’ research focuses on the natural history and ecology of sea slugs with a particular interest in “solar-powered” sea slugs that have evolved the ability to photosynthesize.
