Buffalo, Books & Beer

Award-winning author Matt Gallagher will make his Buffalo debut to discuss his new book DAYBREAK, a timely and important novel about the war in Ukraine. Gallagher is a U.S. Army veteran and the author of four books, including the novels YOUNGBLOOD and EMPIRE CITY. His writing has appeared in Esquire, ESPN, The New York Times, The Paris Review, and Wired. Gallagher’s talk will be hosted free of charge at the Ukrainian-American Civic Center with support from Ukrainians of Buffalo. Representatives from Ukrainian organizations will be on hand to welcome members and guests to the center’s lounge, where food and drink will be available on a cash-only basis. Copies of DAYBREAK will be available for sale at the event by Talking Leaves, Buffalo’s premier independent bookstore. Come for a night of books, beer, and excellent Ukrainian cuisine. Buffalo, Books & Beer is an itinerant barroom literary series that has brought more than a dozen authors to Buffalo, including Sherill Tippins, author of Inside the Dream Palace and winner of the Marfield Prize; and Clay Risen, journalist at The New York Times, author of a half-dozen books on history, and an authority on American whiskey. The series went into hibernation in 2018 but has been revived and will continue intermittently with several author events scheduled for 2024. Further announcements to come. Founders Brian Castner and Matt Higgins are authors and journalists who concocted the idea for B3 in 2014 while sitting in a tavern, talking about how to make book events more appealing to a broader audience. Their goal: bring great writers to Buffalo, and showcase the talent already here in the informal atmosphere of a tavern, and capture a community of beer-drinkers (and teetotalers, too) with a literary bent.
