BUFFALO, BOOKS & BEER (B3), the popular barroom reading series, returns Thurs., May 30, at The Place (229 Lexington Ave., Buffalo 14222) with Tim Wendel, author of the Civil War-era thriller, REBEL FALLS, to be published May 15
Award-winning author and Niagara County-native Tim Wendel will discuss his new book REBEL FALLS (to be published May 15 by Cornell University Press) a historical novel with relevance for our polarized era. Wendel takes readers to the summer of 1864, as the fate of the nation “conceived in Liberty” hangs in the balance, a time when Confederate agents gather in Niagara Falls to plan one last audacious maneuver to turn the tide of the conflict. He introduces us to Rory Chase, a capable yet haunted young woman eager to contribute to the Union cause, who finds her mission involves infiltrating a Rebel spy network in the shadow of the Falls. Rory’s quest to foil the Confederate plot makes for a riveting page-turner.
Advance praise for REBEL FALLS has come from Booklist: “Based on actual yet long-obscured events, Wendel’s absorbing novel is rich in dramatic history, while his depiction of Rory’s internal conflicts brings depth to her high-stakes mission.”
Wendel is a Writer-in-Residence at Johns Hopkins University and the author of Summer of ’68, Cancer Crossings, High Heat, and the historical novels, Castro's Curveball and its sequel Escape from Castro's Cuba. He has appeared on PBS, CNN, ESPN, and NPR, and is the narrator of several audiobooks. He lives in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Wendel’s talk will be hosted free of charge at The Place, a historic Elmwood Village tavern. Food and drink will be available for purchase. Copies of REBEL FALLS will be available for sale at the event by Talking Leaves, Buffalo’s premier independent bookstore.
Come for a night of books conversation, beer, and excellent cuisine.
B3 is an itinerant barroom literary series that has brought more than a dozen authors to Buffalo, including Sherill Tippins, author of Inside the Dream Palace and winner of the Marfield Prize; and Clay Risen, journalist at The New York Times, author of a half-dozen books on history, and an authority on American whiskey. The series continues with several author events scheduled for 2024. Further announcements to come.
Founders Brian Castner and Matt Higgins are authors and journalists who concocted the idea for B3 in 2014 while sitting in a tavern, talking about how to broaden the appeal of book events. Their goal: bring great writers to Buffalo, and showcase the talent already here in the informal atmosphere of a tavern, and capture a community of beer-drinkers (and teetotalers, too) with a literary bent.
