Three Decembers
Three Decembers is an opera written by American composer Jake Heggie with a libretto by Gene Scheer. The opera is based on Terrence McNally's play Some Christmas Letters and is loosely inspired by the life and career of actress and singer Julie Harris.
The idea for Three Decembers originated from a conversation between Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer. The two had previously collaborated on the opera Moby-Dick and were discussing potential future projects. They were both drawn to the idea of creating an opera that focused on family dynamics and personal relationships. Scheer suggested adapting Terrence McNally's play, which dealt with themes of love, loss, and redemption.
