Three Decembers is an opera written by American composer Jake Heggie with a libretto by Gene Scheer. The opera is based on Terrence McNally's play Some Christmas Letters and is loosely inspired by the life and career of actress and singer Julie Harris.
The idea for Three Decembers originated from a conversation between Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer. The two had previously collaborated on the opera Moby-Dick and were discussing potential future projects. They were both drawn to the idea of creating an opera that focused on family dynamics and personal relationships. Scheer suggested adapting Terrence McNally's play, which dealt with themes of love, loss, and redemption. Heggie and Scheer worked closely together to develop the libretto, crafting a powerful and emotionally charged story that follows three characters over the course of three decades. The opera premiered in 2008 at the Houston Grand Opera and has since been performed by numerous opera companies around the world.
Three Decembers has received critical acclaim for its beautiful music, compelling storyline, and complex characters. It has become a staple in the contemporary opera repertoire. Heggie and Scheer's collaboration has created a timeless and unforgettable work that resonates with audiences everywhere.
