Mirabo Press is pleased to present The Semiotics of Home, a solo exhibition of work by University at Buffalo Master of Fine Arts candidate Chloe Koegel. We hope you’ll join us Thursday, March 28th for an opening reception from 6:00 - 9:00p.m.
Koegel’s current work centers on the analysis of our relationships to domestic spaces. “Home is not always a place of protection, safety and security. Home can be a place of uncertainty, violence, and hatred,” the artist states. Through psychological, biological, and ecological research as well as insights from personal experience, and the gathering of others’ stories, the artist translates trauma resulting from domestic abuse into large scale, action-based drawings.
She uses common household items to aggressively and repeatedly make marks on large rolls of paper, often destroying the objects in the act. “Reclamation occurs through the mark-making process,” says Koegel. The creation and exhibition of these drawings is part recording, part healing, and the results are abstract and visceral.

About the artist:
Chloe Koegel is an interdisciplinary artist from Phoenix, NY. Chloe has a BFA in Printmaking from SUNY Potsdam and is currently an MFA candidate at SUNY Buffalo. The concepts Chloe explores in her work are based on the familiar in relation to the environments and homes we inhabit. Chloe examines different relationships in domestic spaces ranging from human-to-human relationships to microbial relationships.
