Betty Carter Birthday Celebration
The 3rd Annual Betty Carter Birthday Celebration, presented free to the community by the Pappy
Martin Legacy Jazz Collective, will take place on May 18, 2024 at Elim Christian Fellowship (70
Chalmers Avenue Buffalo 14214 5pm – 9pm). It will celebrate the life and legacy of the late vocal
artist who is remembered in the world-wide Jazz community as a most distinctive musician, composer,
educator and business woman who dedicated her life to uplifting the Jazz art form to the highest level.
Her transformational approach to improvisational presentation remains an inspiration to all Jazz
vocalists and musicians.
Representing the legacy of Betty Carter at this event will be:
Christie Dasheill - Washington, DC-born and North Carolina-raised vocalist and composer - Living at
the musical crossroads of jazz, rhythm and blues, gospel and soul, she is known for her
improvisational prowess and effortlessly rich and clear tone, she has become one of the most sought-
after artists on the scene today.
Curtis Lundy - Double bassist, composer, producer, choir director, and arranger - Best-known for his
musicianship as part of Betty Carter’s band, Lundy made his debut on the New York jazz scene in 1978.
Over the years, he has performed with an impressive list of musicians, including Art Blakely, John
Griffin, Freddie Hubbard, Pharoah Sanders, John Hicks, Wynton Marsalis, and Bobby Watson.
