Will Dictionaries Exist in 2075?


A panel of practicing lexicographers and scholars from the Dictionary Society of North America will discuss the history of dictionaries, speculate about future of lexicography, and take questions from the audience. This panel discussion is hosted as part of the Dictionary Society of North America's 50th anniversary conference, held in Buffalo, NY, and is free and open to the public. In conjunction with this conference, the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library's Rare Books department has curated an exhibition entitled "What Does It All Mean? Making Sense of the Dictionary," on view through Fall of 2025. Speakers include: Joseph Farquharson, Chief Editor of The Dictionary of the Jamaican Language and Senior Lecturer in Linguistics, University of the West Indies Michael Hancher, Professor Emeritus of English, University of Minnesota Orión Montoya, lexicographer and co-founder of WordNik Wendalyn Nichols, Publishing Manager for Dictionaries at Cambridge University Press Kory Stamper, lexicographer and author of Word by Word: The Secret Life of Dictionaries Lisa Berglund (moderator), Professor of English, Buffalo State University This panel discussion will be taking place in the Central Library Auditorium. The Auditorium can be reached from the main entrance of Central Library or directly from the entrance at Clinton Street at Ellicott Street.
