A free reading with poet Jillian Hanesworth

Buffalo & Erie County Public Library is honored to host Buffalo's first Poet Laureate, Jillian Hanesworth, for a free reading of the Poet's work on May 29, 2025 at 6 pm in Central Library's auditorium. Jillian will read selections of her poetry, observing and reflecting on the social political state of Buffalo as well as exploring her own personal journey. Some of her poems will explore Buffalo before and after the racist massacre on May 14, 2022, 2022 as well as pieces that reflect her personal revolution as a voice of, and from, this city. Jillian Hanesworth has published a number of books of poetry, including "For The Culture: A book of original poetry by Jillian Hanesworth featuring artwork by Tyshaun" in 2017, and "The Revolution will Rhyme" in 2021. Both of these works have recently been added to the Library's Rare Books Collection. This event is free to all, taking place in the Central Library Auditorium. The Auditorium can be reached from the main entrance of Central Library or directly from the entrance at Clinton Street at Ellicott Street. About the Artist: Jillian Hanesworth was born and raised on the East side of Buffalo NY. She began writing at the age of 7 when she would write songs for her mother to sing in church. Over time, Jillian’s writings evolved into short stories and poetry that narrates the lived experiences of her community. Since her first professional poetry performance on February 1st, 2017, Jillian has performed over 500 times in various cities and countries. Jillian is the founder of Literary Freedom, a nationally recognized literacy access program called Buffalo Books, the first and founding Poet Laureate of Buffalo.
