PROOF tells the story of Catherine, the daughter of a brilliant but mentally unstable mathematician, who is struggling to come to terms with her father's recent death and her own identity as a mathematician. When a groundbreaking mathematical proof is discovered among her father's papers, Catherine must confront the legacy of genius and madness that runs in her family. The play has received widespread critical acclaim and been hailed as a modern classic of American theater. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2001 and was later adapted into a feature film starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Anthony Hopkins.
The word "proof" has many meanings in this play, intertwining the realms of logic (both mathematical and otherwise), emotion, certainty and doubt.
