The Salisbury Club of Buffalo, presented by Jonathan Senchyne

The Salisbury Club was a bibliographic society active in Buffalo from the 1940s – 1960s. Named after the Salisbury Brothers, who brough the first printing press brought to Buffalo in 1811, the 20th-century Salisbury Club hosted lectures and created small press publications. Most significantly for the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library, the Salisbury also purchased prestigious texts to donate to the Rare Book Room. Founding members of the Salisbury Club included Ms. Jane Van Arsdale, Rare Book Curator of the Grosvenor Library, amongst other notable book lovers and cultural advocates in Buffalo. The following day, on October 17th, Grosvenor Special Collections will host a "show and tell" of some of the texts that the Salisbury Club helped purchase for the Rare Book Room collection. Presenter Jonathan Senchyne is a professor of book history in the Information School as well as the current director of the Center for the History of Print and Digital Culture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Born and raised in Buffalo, NY, Senchyne’s grandparents were printmakers who founded EasyHill press and helped create the Salisbury Club of Buffalo.
