Written during the height of the Cold War, Hamletmachine and Medeaplays deconstruct the stories of Shakespeare's Hamlet and Euripides' Medea in a post-modern fashion. Muller takes these myths and uses them as an allegory to express the angst of the sociopolitical catastrophic environment of Germany during the Cold War. These works assess the state of Germany, alluding to the constant threat of nuclear annihilation. The Renegade Company aims to tell familiar stories in unfamiliar ways, and Hamletmachine and Medeaplays are a wonderful addition to that mission. Inspired by the music from such industrial music groups like: Throbbing Gristle, Bauhaus, D.A.F, Kraftwerk, and Einsturzende Neubauten as well as the growing Punk Music Scene in the GDR. Combining this musical landscape with with Heiner Muller's poetry elicits a powerful message against authority. The production will employ an atmospheric approach by accessing the five senses.
