The 14th Amendment, guaranteeing “equal protection of the laws” to all Americans, has been the supreme law of the land for more than 150 years. Today it’s back in the headlines, its meaning contested by partisans on both sides of issues ranging from affirmative action, voting rights, and abortion to Donald Trump’s place on the presidential ballot.
Why is the meaning of a constitutional mandate passed to protect newly-freed citizens in the wake of the Civil War now the subject of so much controversy? Learn about the checkered history of this crucial text when REPAIR gathers at the Warner Library on February 22nd.
Attorney and civil rights leader Dennis Parker will describe the wildly varying ways in which the 14th Amendment has been used and abused in American history, from justifying “separate but equal” accommodations in the era of Jim Crow to legitimizing—then limiting—the use of race as a factor in college admissions. He’ll explain what the amendment’s little-understood history reveals about the real intentions of its framers. And he’ll lead a discussion about the role it plays in current debates—including its potential to help guide our country toward a fairer, more just and inclusive vision of citizenship for all.
