Balourdet String Quartet with Adam W. Sadberry, flute

Friends of Music Concerts presents the award-winning Balourdet Quartet -- Angela Bae, violin; Justin DeFilippis, violin; Benjamin Zannoni, viola and Russell Houston, cello. Audience members are invited to socialize and meet the artists at a festive after-concert tea reception, sponsored by Buffy Aronstein of Sunlit Travel. The first work on their program is Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet in D Major, Op. 64, No. 5. The quartet gets its nickname – “The Lark” – from the birdlike melody played by the violin in the first movement. In 1791, Haydn took this quartet and five others to London, where he presented them in public concerts that became wildly popular. Birdsong also inspired our second composer, Amy Beach, whose Theme and Variations for Flute and String Quartet, Op. 80, highlights the quartet’s collaboration with Sadberry. Beach was known as the foremost female composer of her time and this work was described as “dark and sensuous” by Donal Henahan in the New York Times. Bedřich Smetana’s String Quartet No. 1 in E minor also has a subtitle: “From my Life.” It is a musical autobiography ranging from the happiness and exuberance of youth to his adult life and, like Beethoven, struggle with total deafness. The Balourdet, named after chef extraordinaire Antoine Balourdet, has collected a number of honors in just six years. This year alone, they received an Avery Fisher Career Grant, as well as Chamber Music America’s Cleveland Quartet Award. Sadberry is also forging a vibrant career as a flutist – and a coach, mentor and speaker. His honors include Music for Autism’s 2024 Spotlight Artist. Music for Autism presents free, autism-friendly, interactive concerts developed specifically for individuals with autism and their families. Sadberry has performed with the organization four times.
