History of Jews in higher education


Shaarei Tikvah will host Mark Oppenheimer as a scholar-in-residence Saturday, March 18, at 12:30 p.m. He will discuss, among other topics, the history of Jews in the Ivy League. Oppenheimer is the author of five books, including “Knocking on Heaven’s Door: American Religion in the Age of Counterculture,” “The Newish Jewish Encyclopedia” and most recently “Squirrel Hill: The Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting and the Soul of a Neighborhood.” From 2010-16 he was the religion columnist for The New York Times, and he has written for The New York Times Magazine, GQ, Mother Jones and The Nation, among other publications. He is the host of Tablet magazine’s leading Jewish podcast Unorthodox, a weekly show which has had 7 million downloads since 2015, and he also created a second podcast series, Gatecrashers: The Hidden History of Jews in the Ivy League. Oppenheimer holds a Ph.D. in religious studies from Yale, and he has taught at Stanford, Wellesley and Yale, where from 2006 to 2022 he directed the Yale Journalism Initiative. He is now writing a biography of the pioneering advice columnist Ann Landers. He lives with his wife, five children and two dogs in New Haven, Connecticut.
