36.5 / Experiments in Slow-Looking

The public is invited to participate in these experiments taking place between four tidal cycles in relation to the local tides in Gowanus Bay: high-tide on Thursday, March 30 through high-tide on Saturday, April 1. This work encourages slow-looking and engaging the durational. The exhibit will have open gallery hours from 5pm to 9pm on March 30 and 31 and from 12pm to 6:30pm on April 1st. On Saturday April 1st, we will be holding a durational viewing event for half a tidal cycle (6 hours, 23 min), which will end with an artist talk and a walk to the water. You’re invited to choose how long you stay with the work: Quick dip your feet in/out Long enough to feel the shift (1-3 hours) Half of a tidal cycle (with group durational viewing on Sat April 1) Another timeframe of your choosing Since 2013, Sarah Cameron Sunde has stood in nine bodies of water on six continents for a full tidal cycle (12-13 hours). 36.5 / A Durational Performance with the Sea is a series of nine site-specific performances and video artworks, created with communities in Maine, Mexico, San Francisco, the Netherlands, Bangladesh, Brazil, Kenya, Aotearoa-New Zealand, New York City, which inspired the work.
