Two New Years: An Exploration of Jewish and Chinese Celebrations
Celebrate Grandparents Day at the JCCMW with your bubby and zaydie, ma ma and yeh yeh, or pau pau and gong gong! Enjoy samples of Chinese and Jewish foods, a Chinese paper-cutting craft, and a special discussion with Richard Ho about his children’s book Two New Years. Learn more about Rosh Hashanah and Lunar New Year traditions and reflect on the rich blends of cultures and customs in your life. Bring your bubby and zaydie, ma ma and yeh yeh, or pau pau and gong gong (aka grandparents), and spend the day celebrating cherished traditions and creating new memories together!

About the Author
Richard Ho is Chinese, Jewish, and an author … in any order you wish!
During his childhood, he harbored perfectly reasonable career aspirations: professional basketball player, astrophysicist, and Jedi master. When he “grew up,” he studied English and literature in college, worked as a magazine journalist, and eventually became a scriptwriter and editor for an educational website. At some point (probably after his own children arrived on the scene), the thought of writing children’s books popped into his head. He hasn’t been able to shake it loose since.
His first picture book, Red Rover: Curiosity on Mars, was published by Roaring Brook Press in 2019.
Richard is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. In his wildest daydreams, he is also a member of the New York Knicks, the American Astronomical Society, and the Jedi Order.
His book Two New Years was the winner of the 2024 Sydney Taylor Book Award and the 2024 National Jewish Book Award. He loves to craft stories about diverse cultures and the delightful ways they intertwine. He and his proudly multicultural family live in the melting pot of New Jersey.
