Author Visit: Michael Tubridy & Robert Polnar- The Life of Paul O'Dwyer

Author Michael Tubridy will visit the Englewood Library's Mackay Room on Wednesday, September 11 at 7 p.m. to discuss his new book "An Irish Passion for Justice: The Life of Rebel New York Attorney Paul O'Dwyer." Co-author Robert Polner will join the program on Zoom. A book signing will take place after the program. O'Dwyer was a veteran crusader for civil rights and civil liberties, O’Dwyer’s career holds particular interest for several groups in the area: *African-Americans: Starting with his legal representation to integrate major city housing projects in the 1940s, O’Dwyer went on to organize Black voters in Mississippi during the Sixties, and supported the candidacies of key politicians such as Percy Sutton, David Dinkins, and Jesse Jackson. *Hispanic-Americans: O’Dwyer won a landmark 1965 decision before the U.S. Supreme Court, ushering in the end of an English literacy requirement for Spanish-speaking voters. *American Jews: O’Dwyer vigorously supported the creation of Israel, including by representing in an American court gunrunners working for the Israeli independence movement. *The LBGTQ community: One of the first New York politicians to support gay rights, O’Dwyer did so even more dramatically when he marched, in his early 80s, with the Irish Lesbian and Gay Organization when it first attempted to become part of the city’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
