Tom Artin: 70 Years of Photography Retrospective

Tom's son Peter Artin has curated a selection from thousands of Tom's fine art photographs, which he began taking and printing in the 1950s. As technology advanced, Tom became an expert in digital photography and for decades produced prints on fine papers, matting and framing them. Included in this exhibition is a selection of his photographs of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom (1963) along with portraits of fellow jazz musicians, of flora and fauna, of the animals he loved, of poets and artists, friends and family. After earning a PhD from Princeton in Comparative Literature, and spending the early part of his career as a professor, Tom decided to become a full-time jazz musician in the 1980's, was the house trombone player at Eddie Condon's iconic jazz club in NYC, traveled with the Smithsonian Jazz Band and Louis Armstrong All Stars, played at the White House, and otherwise traveled the world sharing his gift for music and storytelling. Tom returned to photography (having never left it, but with a greater intensity) in the 1990s, and showed his work in many solo and group shows. He became a recognized artist in photography and was represented by Bruce McGill Graphics and Artography for many years, known for his ability to capture his subjects in different, subtle, and powerful ways. He traveled to Iceland, in his father's footsteps; Emil Artin, one of the most important mathematicians of the 20th Century, went to Iceland to play music and Tom followed the same path, photographing the same waterfalls, sea views, horses, meadows, and overall beauty of the country. Staying in guest houses, Tom was able to find the same views as he discovered in his father's very small black and white prints, and collaborated with his sister, Karin Tate, to publish a translation of the German hand written journal into a book. Tom only stopped taking photographs when he was diagnosed with one rare illness after another, followed by a near-deadly experience with Covid a few years ago. His son Peter Artin, a pillar in the Rockland and NYC arts community, has assembled a retrospective exhibition which will be on display only up until December 17th, at the Artin Arts Studio and Gallery in Sparkill, which is closing following this final exhibition. All are welcome to enjoy the artistry and beauty of Tom on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 15, 16, and 17, from Noon to 6 PM, with wine and cheese receptions each day from 4 to 6 PM. This is a splendid way to begin an evening in "Downtown Sparkill" before dining at one of the Hamlet's great restaurants, and to appreciate the work and life of one of Rockland's finest artists.
