Danbury Concert Association presents Essex Octet
When eight virtuosic musicians—each a renowned master of classical string, brass, or wind repertoire—appeared together several years ago in a Connecticut music series, they were dubbed the “Essex Octet,” in reference to the town that hosted them.
The name stuck—as did the desire to keep the collaboration going.
For the third concert in its 2023–2024 series, the Danbury Concert Association will present the Essex Octet on Sunday, March 10 at 3:00 p.m. in the Veronica Hagman Concert Hall of the Visual and Performing Arts Center (VPAC) on the west side campus of Western Connecticut State University.
The program includes Mozart’s Serenade for String Quintet, K. 525, “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik,” and Franz Schubert’s “monumental, rarely heard” Schubert Octet in F Major, D. 803.
The octet’s roster includes clarinetist David Shifrin, returning to the DCA stage; William Purvis, horn; Frank Morelli, bassoon; Ani Kavafian, violin; Ida Kavafian, violin; Steven Tenenbom, viola; Peter Wiley, cello; and Timothy Cobb, double bass. A meet-the-artist reception will follow the performance.

WCSU’s Visual and Performing Center, located at 43 Lake Avenue Extension, Danbury, provides open seating for up to 350.
