Charlie Ahearn is the director and producer of Wild Style, a 1983 film regarded as the first Hip-Hop motion picture. A hybrid project that exists as both a musical and a documentary, the film features Hip-Hop pioneers of the period, including Fred “Fab Five Freddy” Brathwaite, Lee Quiñones, Lady Pink, The Rock Steady Crew, The Cold Crush Brothers, Queen Lisa Lee of Zulu Nation, Grandmaster Flash, and ZEPHYR, who play themselves in a loosely scripted story shot entirely in the South Bronx, the Lower East Side, and MTA subway yards.
Carlo McCormick is a cultural critic and curator based in New York City. He has written for Art in America, Art News, Art Forum, and his column “Art Seen” appeared in The East Village Eye beginning in 1982.
