This Event has Passed
50th Anniversary-Year (1972-2022) of Johnny U's "Last-Season" in Baltimore. This coming Sunday (10-2-2022) the Buffalo Bills will face the Baltimore Ravens (1:00 PM) at M&T Bank Stadium. This highly anticipated AFC Showdown has the backdrop of the legacy of Baltimore Colts Icon John Unitas. It will be 50-years and 1-day to the date that Johnny U and the Colts (10-1-1972) went on the road and defeated the Buffalo Bills in week 3 of the 1972 NFL season.
The Colts won 17-0 at old War Memorial Stadium. Unitas passed 12-28 for 184 yards, 1 TD, and 2 INT. to help lift the Colts to victory. Johnny U's last home appearance in a Colts uniform would come 2 months later on December 3rd when the Colts faced the Buffalo Bills and won 35-7. It would be Baltimore's last win of the season (week 12). They would lose in week 13 & 14 (Chiefs 24-10, Dolphins 16-0). The 1972 Dolphins (17-0) still remain as the last team in NFL history to compete a perfect season.
Unitas would come in late in the 4th quarter and did his magic one last time when he connected with #33 Eddie Hinton for a 63-yard TD pass. Hinton's #33 from Unitas at Memorial Stadium on 33rd Street in his last home game in Baltimore will forever live in Charm City sports lore. The Charm City nickname would be coined 3-years later in 1975.
