Friends of the 2nd Company Governor’s Horse Guard to Hold Annual Compost Drive

Calling all area gardeners! The Friends of the 2nd Company Governor’s Horse Guard (2GHG) will once again be holding its annual compost drive on four Saturdays in April, starting April 1st through April 29th (no compost drive held on Easter Saturday, April 8th), 21 Old Farm Road, Newtown, immediately behind the Newtown Dog Park. Volunteers from the Friends of 2GHG will be on site 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. to assist in collecting compost. Visitors should bring their own bags, pails, tubs, and containers to fill and take home. No trucks or trailer loads will be permitted – only while supply lasts. The annual event draws garden enthusiasts from all over Connecticut. “Organic compost helps to replenish nutrients to gardens, and the compost drive is a way for our (2GHG) horses to contribute to local gardens” notes Lieutenant Karen DeFreese, an active member of 2GHG, who along with her husband, Lieutenant Colonel DeFreese, were instrumental in starting the compost drive in 2015. A suggested $20 donation gladly is accepted and will help to support the care and feeding of the 2GHG horses. Horticulture magazine notes, like other manures, and other home compost, horse manure compost is an organic material that can help you take care of the soil in your garden and provide the plants you grow with the nutrients they need. Horse manure will improve the nutrient content of the soil and improve its structure. Using horse manure compost in your garden will also improve the soil’s ability to retain moisture and can be especially useful to improve free-draining soils too. So come out to the beautiful Fairfield Hills 2GHG campus and pickup your compost while supplies last! The Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard (2GHG) is an all-volunteer unit of the Organized State Militia. Upon the request of the office of the Governor of the State of Connecticut, the Adjutant General, municipalities and non-government organizations, the 2GHG participates in ceremonial functions, operates service programs, and entertains the public throughout the State of Connecticut and at its headquarters for the education and benefit of the citizens of the State to promote Connecticut’s rich and revolutionary history.
