Early Music Afternoons continues its season on Sunday, March 10, 2024, with a concert of French baroque music performed by Na’ama Lion and Peter H. Bloom, baroque flutes, Carol Lewis, viola da gamba, and Olav Chris Henriksen, baroque guitar and theorbo. The quartet will play a variety of chamber works unique to this elegant age in French music, including pieces by Lully, Gaultier, Philidor, and Marais. The concert will take place at 3:00 pm at the newly renovated Somerville Museum, One Westwood Road (at Central St.), Somerville, MA. Admission is $25 general admission, $20 students, seniors, and Museum members. Tickets are available at the door. Street parking is available, and the Museum is now ADA compliant. For further information, call (617) 666-9810 or go to https://www.somervillemuseum.org/concerts Louis XIV of France, known as the “Sun King”, had had a great interest in music since his childhood, and he made the performing arts into a centerpiece in the international political image of his court. Unlike many monarchs, the king was very knowledgeable about music, choosing for himself the musicians who would serve him, both for public displays and for private entertainments. He surrounded himself with musical elite, including Jean-Baptiste Lully, guitarist, violinist and composer, who became superintendent of the royal music. “Symphonies en Trio” features trios and baroque guitar solos by Lully, as well as a fugue and dance music by Pierre Danican Philidor, and dances and character pieces by Pierre Gaultier. As a special treat, the ensemble will perform the trio in e minor by Marin Marais, viola da gamba virtuoso and composer, who studied composition with Lully and frequently conducted Lully’s operas. Na’ama Lion and Peter Bloom are both well-known in the Boston area as well as internationally as versatile performers on historical flutes. Ms. Lion teaches at the Longy School of Music of Bard College and directs a chamber music program at Harvard College. Mr. Bloom has given workshops, master classes and lecture-demonstrations across the globe. Olav Chris Henriksen and Carol Lewis, frequently heard as soloists, have also performed and recorded with many ensembles in the United States and abroad, including Ensemble Chaconne (of which Mr. Bloom is also a member), Boston Camerata, Hespèrion XXI, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Emmanuel Music, Capella Clausura, Capriccio Stravagante, and others.
