Hunts, Bagpipes & Scots Tunes: Music of the Scottish Renaissance & Baroque

Musical life in Scotland was greatly influenced by political events in that country: Scotland had been an independent monarchy during the 16th century, but in 1603 James VI of Scotland became James I, King of England, and by the 18th century, Scotland had become part of England. During this time, the Scots began to collect their folk songs for patriotic reasons, long before many other countries did so. There is a fascinating mix of art music and folk heritage in the music of Scotland, dating back to the renaissance and baroque periods, and we do know that this music was played on viols, lutes, citterns, and (later) English guitars. Duo Maresienne will perform a variety of selections, ranging from grounds and popular tunes to more serious pieces, by Black, Lauder, Beck, Matteis, and Bremner, among others. The concert will feature several anonymous scordatura “bagpipes” tunes for viola da gamba, plus duos for English guitar and bass viol by Geminiani, and “Pibrock, a Highland Battel” by Oswald. Olav Chris Henriksen and Carol Lewis have performed and recorded with many ensembles in the United States and abroad, including Boston Camerata, Ensemble Chaconne, Emmanuel Music, The Bach Project, Capella Clausura, Cantata Singers, Capriccio Stravagante, Hespèrion and others. They specialize in a range of music for bowed and plucked instruments from the 15th to the 18th centuries. Recent performances include appearances at St. Luke’s Chapel (Portland, ME) and King’s Chapel (Boston, MA).
