Newsies JR. is a 60-minute adaptation of the 2012 Broadway hit Newsies, featuring the Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman, and book by Harvey Fierstein. Inspired by the Newsboy Strike of 1899, Newsies JR. tells the rousing tale of Jack Kelly (Will Murdock of Scituate) and his child-labor crew of over-looked, underpaid “newsies.” When the titans of newspaper publishing across New York City raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack is compelled to rally the newsies to strike and fight for what is right. United with little more than sheer courage and determination, they discover how to bring change for good and make history.
Featuring powerful songs as “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,” Newsies JR. is packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message. Suitable for all ages, it is a wonderful, empowering family show featuring a strong ensemble cast of students from Cohasset, Scituate, Norwell, Hingham, Weymouth and Braintree.
Newsies JR. is on stage at the Scituate Performing Arts Center at Scituate High School on Friday, July 19 at 7:00pm, Saturday, July 20 at 4:00pm, and Sunday, July 21at 2:00 pm.
