SOL Y CANTO PRESENTS SOFIA RIBEIRO AND JUAN OSPINA PLUS THE BACKYARD COLLECTIVE

Years ago, the Boston Globe called Sol y Canto “Boston’s sublime pan-Latin music, ambassadors”, and they’re still at it after 30 years! They’re unstoppable. On this special evening, founders Rosi and Brian Amador will sing a short set of songs, including the title cut of their new album -and first single- released on all digital platforms on February 14th, “En tu órbita“. Sol y Canto is also proud to present the whimsical improvisations of the new vocal ensemble (of which Rosi is a cofounder), The Backyard Collective. The evening will culminate with the stellar performance of the exquisite vocals of Sofia Ribeiro with renowned pianist/composer Juan Ospina. This is a multilingual, dynamic and spontaneous evening you will not soon forget. Expect to be wowed, to laugh, sing, learn some body percussion and connect with a playful musical community. SOL Y CANTO FOLK GLOBAL LATIN Sol y Canto is the award winning Pan-Latin ensemble led by Puerto Rican/Argentine singer and percussionist Rosi Amador and New Mexican guitarist, singer and composer Brian Amador. Featuring Rosi’s crystalline voice and Brian’s lush Spanish guitar and inventive compositions, Sol y Canto is known for making their music accessible to Spanish- and non-Spanish speaking audiences of all ages. Sol y Canto’s original songs are distinguished by poetic, often quirky lyrics set in a framework of varied musical styles with surprising twists. They can make you dance, laugh, cry and sigh all in one concert. Their arrangements of classic and contemporary Latin tunes are always fresh and original. With Brian’s commanding, intricate guitar playing, Rosi’s rhythmic drive on cajón and bongos, and liberal use of vocal improvisation, the duo often sounds like a much larger ensemble. Since 1994, Sol y Canto has brought audiences to their feet from the Kennedy Center to the California World Music Festival, Boston’s Symphony Hall, Puerto Rico’s Museo de Arte and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, as well as countless club shows and house concerts. The Boston Globe hails them as “sublime ambassadors of the Pan-Latin tradition”. Music critic Norman Weinstein of the Christian Science Monitor and Boston Phoenix observes: “Every Sol y Canto album is a demonstration of what the poet Federico García Lorca identified as deep song. Always they evoke the sensual splendor of simply being vitally, vividly alive in a magical and mysterious universe. Brian Amador is a Spanish modernist poet in the guise of a musician…Together, Rosi and Brian Amador create a musical marriage made in heaven.” SOFIA RIBEIRO & JUAN OSPINA LATIN With over a decade of collaboration on various musical projects, Portuguese singer Sofia Ribeiro and multi-talented Colombian musician Juan Andrés Ospina share a rich artistic history. Their partnership has led to the creation of Sofia Ribeiro’s albums “Ar” (2012), “Mar Sonoro” (2016), and “Lunga” (2019), projects in which Juan Andrés not only played the piano but also managed the musical production and arrangements. Similarly, the albums “Mil e uma cores” (2012) and “Casa” (2021) showcase their collaboration, with Juan Andrés contributing to the recording and production of several tracks. Since 2019, both have been faculty members at Circlesongs, a vocal improvisation event led by the legendary Bobby McFerrin, which brings together around 200 international singers each year. Together, Sofia and Juan Andrés have taught vocal improvisation workshops in Spain, Colombia, Portugal, and the United States, in addition to performing hundreds of concerts, either as a duo or with a full band in more 15 countries. With a professional trajectory spanning over twenty years and a discography of more than ten solo albums, Sofia Ribeiro has established herself as a world authority in vocal improvisation. She has shared the stage with prominent musicians from various corners of the globe and performed at renowned venues and festivals across Europe, the United States, and Latin America. Currently, she balances her concert career with her band and the teaching of vocal improvisation workshops, enchanting audiences and students alike with her talent and charisma. Juan Andrés Ospina, a Colombian musician known for his versatility and extensive international career across a variety of musical genres and contexts, has made a name for himself as a producer, arranger, composer, singer, pianist, educator, multi-instrumentalist, comedian, and online content creator. He has solidified his reputation as a multifaceted artist in the music scene, collaborating with artists of the caliber of Bobby McFerrin, Paquito D’Rivera, Karol G, Sofia Ribeiro, Marta Gómez, the WDR Big Band, Michael League, his brother Nicolás Ospina, and many others. THE BACKYARD COLLECTIVE A CAPELLA The Backyard Collective is a small group of Boston-area singers who are passionately dedicated to vocal improvisation. Its members began singing together in 2020 through an online study group. Determined to sing
